Stopping by Another Science Teacher

At Pequea Valley, there are numerous other incredible science teachers- one of them being Mr. Masser's wife! She teaches biology at Pequea Valley, so we get to see her often (we also eat lunch together)!

Since I was tasked with visiting another science teacher, I thought Mrs. Masser would be perfect to visit. I also really liked this prompt because I originally wanted to be a biology teacher, so I wanted to see what I was missing out on. I ended up visiting Mrs. Masser during her forensics class. I came on a really fun day, too; they were practicing mapping out crime scenes!

I thought this was super cool- we never had anything like this when I was in high school. The learners looked very engaged in their activity that they were completing, which helped to get them up and moving around the room with a group. I liked watching them work together to map out crime scenes that were placed around the room. It was neat to see how their sketches differed.

Learners completed an inquiry-based activity which required little guidance from Mrs. Masser. She taught them the ropes and what each sketch should contain, but she allowed them to create their sketches themselves. She was always present for any questions they might have. I liked her hands-off method to this lesson in order to get students up and moving and completing their sketches.

Mrs. Masser was able to focus their attention using her body language. She moved around a lot and was able to keep them interested by being active in the classroom. She also had a lot of artistically inclined students and was able to utilize their interests during their crime scene mapping. Mrs. Masser kept the class goal-oriented by utilizing a deadline; it needed to be done by the end of class. In terms of visualizing new material, this activity was putting what they have learned all together. They learned about scale, labeling, and other drawing specifics, but this was where they got to put all of that together.

I really enjoyed being able to sit in on Mrs. Masser's forensics class. This is a super cool class offered at Pequea Valley that students clearly enjoy learning in.
