SAE Day: Episode 2

On April 20th, I got to conduct my second SAE visit with my cooperating teacher, Mrs. VanSant!

What is SAE?

Let's refresh here- it's been a while since my first SAE visit. SAE is an acronym for "Supervised Agricultural Experience", and it is exactly what it sounds like. We utilize the opportunity of Supervised Agricultural Experiences for learners to get experience in different agricultural fields outside of the classroom. SAE helps FFA members to obtain FFA degrees, proficiency awards, career exposure, and even school credit!

My 2nd SAE Visit!

Now for the moment you have all been waiting for: hearing about my very first ever SAE visit! Ag teachers will conduct SAE visits to see (in person) all of the cool things that their members are up to. At these visits, the advisor and member will talk together to set SAE goals, acknowledge strengths, and navigate areas for improvement. During these visits, we also review the records that the SAE holder maintains in a website called AET (the Agricultural Experience Tracker).

Pequea Valley senior with her mare

The member that I was able to visit with was a senior at Pequea Valley, and this was her very last SAE visit. Her SAE is also super cool: she shows and breeds Gypsy Vanner (Gypsy Cobb) horses. Her horses are so, so beautiful, and she takes much deserved pride in her work with them.         Since this was her last SAE visit ever, we focused around reflection. When asked what her biggest takeaways were, she mentioned she's now more aware of the management side of being a horse owner. She better understand the monetary and time commitment that goes into this SAE. She also was able to create lifelong friends at horse shows and other events, and learned that she loved the event of fox hunting!

Through her experience, she was also able to determine her first choice in furthering her education. Upon graduating, she is planning to attend Delaware Valley University to major in Equine Management and Business, as well as ride on their IHSA equestrian team. At DelVal, she also has the opportunity to bring one of her own horses to school with her and board on campus!

Her future is bright and is reflected well through her SAE. She has put a lot of time and effort into her project and her involvement in FFA at Pequea Valley while being a great asset to the program!
