Culturally Responsive Teaching
What is Culturally Responsive Teaching and What Have I Learned?
This past week in AEE 412, I was introduced to the topic of Culturally Responsive Teaching (CRT) I had honestly never heard of it before, and am very interested in how we will apply it once we begin student teaching next spring.
During our time with Dr. Laura Rice, she introduced us to a couple guest instructors who gave us real-life experiences from their lives where they utilized CRT. We were taught about local positions in education systems that assisted students and their families of different backgrounds and/or cultures. This was really cool to learn about because it helped me understand that this often has to extend out through the walls of the classroom. To help the students, we must first understand their familial situations.
After learning of the position at State College School District, I checked out Pequea Valley’s website to see if they had anything similar: and they did.
How Can I Use This During Student Teaching?
When I begin my student teaching next spring, I am looking forward to meeting who head PV’s ESL position. I would love to hear how they are able to serve and support students and their families throughout the district. When I meet the ESL educator, I am looking forward to leaning was that I can integrate the idea of CRT into my classroom. One way that I will be able to integrate CRT into my classes this spring is by utilizing dynamic instruction and providing a variety of ways to deliver content and initiate discussion. By switching up delivery and using lectures, discussions, and small group/partner activities, every student will have an opportunity to engage in their preferred instruction.
Krista, I enjoyed reading about what you took away from CRT and how you plan to integrate CRT into your classroom and through varying instruction.
ReplyDeleteKrista, that is so exciting to hear how you tied this week back into your student teaching experience and have a plan of how you are going to implement what you learned! I am so excited to hear how it goes!
