Kickin' Off GLAG22!

Penn State has offered me many new opportunities- from living and working at the dairy, to attending the 2021 World Food Prize, and now getting to be a part of a community of learners called GLAG! GLAG stands for Global Learning in Agriculture.

 What is GLAG?

I had never heard of GLAG until I met Dr. Foster this fall. The GLAG community is huge! There are over 1,000 participants from around the world: all 50 U.S. states and roughly 45 countries are represented this year. GLAG is a virtual conference held on Whova, a platform that makes it easy for everyone in this global community to communicate as easily as we can. Since this is a global community, all areas of the world are taken for account. Different sessions are launched at different times around the world- making it more convenient for more participants!

GLAG is normally a week-long conference in February, but this year is special. For the first time, GLAG is a year-long virtual conference! All sessions posted to Whova will be accessible throughout the year once they are posted.

Why is GLAG important?

Many participants are educators of some sort. Many think that once someone becomes a teacher they stop learning. The truth is that educators never stop learning! That is why GLAG is an incredible resource for all educators. Not only are the sessions themselves very interesting, but Whova has been a great way to connect with educators and agriculturalists from across the country. We are able to share what agriculture, education, and agricultural education looks like to each of us. Being a part of a community like GLAG helps us to develop as educators and learners.

Conference in a Box!

Living at the PSU dairy means that I live with seven other people. Living with that many others makes the conference in a box extra fun! The box is filled with goodies from around the world. Our favorite treat was the hot fruits from Pakistan. We were all hesitant to try something that was sweet and spicy at the same time, but we were all pleasantly surprised at how well the flavors tasted when they were combined.

I was also super excited to receive the book A World Without Fish that was inspired by the 2021 World Food Prize laureate Shakuntala Haraksingh Thilsted. Dr. Thilsted has conducted a lot of research with World Fish to create healthier aquatic ecosystems.

My friend, Mckenzie, and I with Shakuntala Haraksingh Thilsted, the 2021 World Food Prize laureate!

Who is a part of GLAG?

Though GLAG is a lot of professional development and community with educators and agriculturalists, GLAG is open to anyone! There are also three subsections of GLAG: GLAGjr, GLAGreads, and GLAGcreates. GLAG is for anyone and we would love to have you join our community!
